BICHAT BALLS

BICHECTOMY

Bichat balls are fatty pads found in the cheeks, in front of the masseter muscle. Depending on the size of the balls or fatty tissue, the face can take on round shapes with poorly defined angles.

For this reason, many patients with a complex put themselves in the hands of a cosmetic surgeon. The bichectomy allows the surgeon to reduce the size of the Bichat balls, managing to refine the cheeks and accentuate the cheekbones.

It is a simple, fast and safe surgery. A small incision is made on the inside of the mouth, inside each of the cheeks and from there the fat balls are removed atraumatically. The internal incision is so small that it does not require stitches or leave visible scars.

The intervention is ambulatory, minimally invasive and does not require admission to the clinic. It is performed under local anesthesia and sedation for greater patient comfort. As a result, the recovery is fast and you can return to your normal life in a couple of days.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Bichat balls are fatty pads located on both sides of the face, inside the cheeks. They are located in the thickness of the muscle layer near the masseter muscle. Bichectomy is a surgical intervention that consists of removing these pads, which makes the face appear thinner and with marked features.

The intervention is quick and simple, lasting approximately 30-60 minutes. It is an outpatient procedure, it is performed under local anesthesia and there is the option of performing it with sedation. In this way, a small incision is made in the mucosa, inside the mouth, on the inner side of each one of the cheeks.

A blood test and an electrocardiogram will be needed. However, on very specific occasions additional tests will be required.

Before the intervention, it is recommended not to smoke or take medications that can alter blood coagulation (such as some analgesics or some natural products). Likewise, in patients who usually take anticoagulants, the doctor will indicate the suspension. However, in the case of oral pathologies and devices, it should be discussed previously with the surgeon, since it may be contraindicated.

In most cases you should fast (no food or drinks) a minimum of 6-7 hours before the time of surgery. In the same way, it is recommended not to wear metal in direct contact with the body (such as earrings, chains, watches, rings, etc.) and go with a clean face, without makeup or nail polish.

Recovery time from a bichectomy is very fast. The inflammation and bruises, which can come out, will disappear in a few days. During the postoperative period it will be necessary to use a girdle that presses the cheeks for the first 5 days. In addition, the application of cold (Hilotherapy) will reduce recovery times and the appearance of bruises, also reducing the use of painkillers.

It’s not painful. In the postoperative period, the patient may have discomfort, depending on their degree of sensitivity, and inflammation. That is why analgesics and anti-inflammatories will be prescribed, in addition to the application of cold therapy (Hiloterapia) to reduce this discomfort.

Some recommendations after the bichectomy are: avoid tobacco, alcohol, hot drinks, clean the mouth and teeth after each meal with antiseptic mouthwash. Medications that may promote bleeding should also be avoided for a period of 48 hours after the procedure. In the same way, you should use sun protection (SPF 50+) and avoid extreme temperatures (sauna or thermal treatments or freezing weather) during the following two weeks. Finally, one week after the intervention, specific creams indicated by the surgeon will be applied and lymphatic drainage will be performed to speed up recovery.

As a general rule, people who undergo this type of surgery are healthy patients and there are usually no complications. Even so, the risks are minimal and in most cases reversible.

The ideal is to sleep on your back, keeping your head higher than the chest with the help of pillows, for at least a few days after the operation.

Usually the patient can get back to his routine in 2-4 days, depending on the type of work and routine.

The result of a bichectomy is generally already appreciated from the third week after the intervention, once the bruising and swelling disappear, and it improves over time. However, the final results can take up to two months. For this reason, we recommend being proactive in the face of important public events and performing the surgery a couple of months in advance.

The results of a bichectomy are definitive, as long as the patient does not gain weight considerably.
