BOTULINUM TOXIN
ANTI-WRINKLE TREATMENT
Botulinum Toxin is used as a neuromodulatory treatment to reduce the appearance of fine lines and expression wrinkles.
The treatment consists of infiltrating the product, using a very fine needle, in the areas where there are expression wrinkles, such as between the eyebrows, forehead and crow’s feet. Once injected, it relaxes the facial muscle and prevents it from contracting and wrinkling.
In addition to being an anti-wrinkle treatment, it is also used for other purposes, such as controlling excessive sweating or treating oily skin and acne. It is a minimally invasive procedure that is performed on an outpatient basis, without requiring anesthesia.
The procedure, performed by an expert plastic surgeon, is applied quickly in a matter of minutes. However, the results are not immediate, but rather begin to be appreciated within approximately 3-5 days. It is important that the patient does not touch or massage the treated area during the first days.
Results are temporary, last between 6 and 8 months, and provide a natural expression and youth to the face. After that time, the toxin is reabsorbed and eliminated naturally by our body.
Once the effects of Botulinum Toxin disappear, it is recommended to carry out a second session and annual maintenance.

The trust of our patients extends to the post-operative period, when they allow us to share their before and after so that other people can see our work. The only retouching of these images is that of tattoo ink and skin moles, erased to protect the privacy of our patients.

The medication used in this treatment blocks the release of a substance called acetylcholine in the ‘dynamic’ facial muscles. As a result, it reduces the activity and strength of the muscle that causes the formation of moderate to severe wrinkles or folds, or, in the case of excessive sweating, of the gland that produces it.
Botulinum toxin treatment reduces the use of specific “dynamic” muscles that eventually lead to lines, folds, and wrinkles. If treatment is started early enough, it can prevent those wrinkles and fine lines from developing or getting worse.
It is not age that determines when it is appropriate to start this anti-wrinkle treatment, but rather the severity of the wrinkles. Wrinkles appear at different ages depending on each person, their cellular changes, the reduction of collagen, genetic factors or the damage caused by the sun. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has approved this treatment for use in people 18 to 65 years of age.
No, the effect of botulinum toxin is not permanent. The nerve fiber resumes its full function without suffering damage in the 4 to 6 months after the treatment, restoring the muscle to its complete normality.
A facial analysis of each patient will be carried out to determine the appropriate treatment areas, always seeking a balance between smoothing wrinkles and preserving a natural facial expression. After this first assessment, the treatment will proceed, which usually lasts approximately 10 minutes, depending on the areas to be treated.
The approximate duration of the results is 4 to 6 months. However, how long the effects of botulinum toxin will last depends on each patient and some factors such as smoking or playing sports. Depending on the results obtained and the patient’s objectives, the next session will be planned.
It is recommended to avoid taking NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) such as ibuprofen or aspirin during the week prior to treatment. In case of neuromuscular diseases, the doctor will determine if the treatment can be carried out.
You should not touch or manipulate the treated area or do any kind of sport for 24-48 hours after the procedure. It is also discouraged to lie down or wear very tight helmets for the first 5 hours. In addition, it will be necessary to use sun protection (FPS 50+) if any purple appears and avoid high temperatures for the next 48 hours.
It is generally used to reduce wrinkles and expression lines on the face. However, it is also used in cases of hyperhidrosis, migraine, muscle spasms, sialorrhea and to improve hair.
In 2004, the FDA approved injection of this medication as a safe and effective treatment for excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) of the armpits, hands, or feet.
This treatment relaxes the facial muscles to prevent them from contracting and creating wrinkles (dynamic wrinkles). By contrast, hyaluronic acid dermal fillers fill in existing wrinkles (static wrinkles), restoring volume and resulting in a smoother surface. However, with both treatments the effects are enhanced and, therefore, they complement each other very well.
If I want to have this treatment before an important event, how far in advance should I schedule it?
The result will be seen approximately from the fifth day, producing the maximum effect between 10 and 14 days after. Before an upcoming event it is advisable to schedule an appointment three weeks in advance. If a small bruise appears, it usually lasts three to seven days.
It is possible to combine it as long as the doctor approves. If the patient undergoes other treatments in the same area, it is possible to perform them before the botox or postpone them for 5 days.
It is a practically painless procedure. The patient usually feels pinching from the needle that injects the toxin. However, the degree of discomfort will depend on each patient; those who are more sensitive can apply a topical numbing cream prior to treatment to increase comfort, although this is generally not necessary.
In cases of hypertrophy of the buccinator muscle or bruxism, this area of the face becomes more marked. With 3-4 injections of botulinum toxin, muscle activity is reduced, making the face more refined without altering the functionality of the mouth.
It is advisable to wait at least 3 weeks after the neuromodulator treatment. If the appropriate times are respected, there are no side effects or risks of compromising the results.
Yes, this treatment reduces frizz. This is due to a lower production of sweat and, therefore, a lower need for washing and a longer duration of other treatments such as ironing or perms.
Botulinum toxin treatment is effective at any time of the year.
Occasionally localized pain, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, redness or bruising may appear in the treated area. In rare situations, a headache may appear that subsides with simple analgesics. In general, no serious or irreversible side effects.
This treatment is very safe when injected by an experienced doctor. The main complication usually involves the unintentional weakening of a muscle that was not targeted, often because the drug has migrated. If this occurs, patients may be prescribed medications that can help. In any case, the effects of the treatment are reversible.
