BREAST LIFT

MASTOPEXY

Breast lift, or mastopexy, is usually a procedure for cosmetic purposes. In the same way, in some cases it also has a functional connotation, contributing to the well-being and health of women.

This surgical intervention consists of relocating the lax and sagging mammary gland, removing excess skin. As a result, we get firm and young looking breasts.

Frequently, the patients who come to cosmetic surgery are women who have had significant fluctuations in the volume of the breasts, due to lactation, weight change or normal tissue degeneration due to age.

On other occasions, they are women who have breast implants that have become displaced or need a replacement. Furthermore, in the same operation it is possible to do a breast augmentation, placing an implant or with fat from the patient.

The breast lift procedure is performed under general anesthesia and requires a 24-hour hospital stay. Normally, the patient is discharged the day after the operation and is scheduled a week later for the first check-up.

Breast lift with prosthesis

Breast lift with a filler prosthesis is one of the surgical alternatives frequently indicated to correct, in a single intervention, a sagging and empty breast.

It offers the possibility of raising the breast, achieving an increase in volume in thin patients or those who want a voluptuous and firm chest at the same time.

Also known as mastopexy with prosthesis, this surgery consists of placing a breast implant to increase the size and achieve a more proportionate and harmonious result.

Breast lift with fat

Mastopexy with the patient´s own fat consists of using fat extracted from the same patient , as filler material to give volume or reshape the breasts.

The fatty tissue is obtained, through liposuction, from an area of excess from different parts of the body (such as the abdomen or hips), it is then filtered to later be infiltrated into the breasts.

The mammary tissues are repositioned and molded to create an auto-prosthesis that will give more projection to the breasts.

The results of this process are long-lasting, achieving a natural breast with a real texture. In addition, by using the patient’s own tissues, the possibility of rejection is avoided.

Hybrid breast lift

The hybrid breast lift consists of lifting the sagging breast, combining breast prostheses with the patient’s own fat.

The placement of breast implants, smaller than usual, is complemented by a lipotransfer, which allows the surgeon to finish shaping the breast. With this combination, an even more natural result and lighter breasts are achieved.

This innovative method is an interesting alternative in line with the demands of the younger generations, who prioritize a natural breast with a similar feel to breasts without a prosthesis.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

A breast lift surgery usually lasts between 2-3 hours, depending on the case and the type of intervention. Normally, a breast lift with prosthesis lasts 3 and a half hours, while hybrid mastopexy lasts 4 and a half hours.

In selected cases, an increase in breast volume can be achieved using the patient’s own fat or the mammary gland itself (auto-prosthesis).

In selected cases, a volumetric breast augmentation can be achieved using fat from the same patient. For prosthesis replacement and in some cases of breast augmentation, the option of local anesthesia plus sedation may be considered.

7-14 days after the intervention, the patient will be able to return to her daily routine. However, it will depend on the intervention carried out and the type of work to be done. The guidelines for returning to physical exercise will be established with the surgeon.

It is necessary to fast for at least 6 to 7 hours (no food or drink) before the time of surgery. You should also avoid wearing metal in direct contact with the body (such as earrings, chains, watches, rings, etc.) and go with a clean face, without makeup or nail polish.

A blood test, an electrocardiogram and in some cases a chest X-ray will be needed. Depending on the age of the patient or the familiarity of some pathologies, a breast ultrasound, a mammogram or an MRI will be requested.

Before surgery, it is recommended not to smoke or take medications that can alter blood coagulation (such as some analgesics or some natural products). If the patient regularly takes anticoagulants, the doctor will indicate the suspension and the guidelines to follow.

Depending on the type of technique and surgery, the postoperative period may vary. In general, discomfort after a mammoplasty is easily controlled with analgesics.

During the month following the surgery, you will not be able to make strong physical efforts or do intense physical activities. In addition, the patient must wear specific bras that will be provided by the doctor. In some cases, the application of cold through Hilotherapy will be recommended.

A good postoperative period, respecting the guidelines, helps to avoid future complications and will guarantee a faster recovery and better results. In breast lift surgery, tobacco use will influence scars more than in other interventions.

Depending on the type of intervention, a 24-hour hospitalization will be necessary, or it can be performed on an outpatient basis. Prosthesis replacement, for example, in many cases does not require hospital admission.

The best sleeping position during the first week after breast surgery is on your back. Pillows can be used to keep the head higher than the chest and for greater comfort. With all this, the surgeon will indicate when you can sleep on your side again.

The result begins to be appreciated from the fourth week after the intervention, once the skin has relaxed. Although it will improve over the next three months, you must wait for the maturation period of the scars to elapse, which in the case of the breasts will be between 6 and 12 months.

No problem. If you want to gain volume, fat transfer can be complemented with a breast implant, since the infiltrated fat is part of the structure of the breast.

It is possible to remove the breast prostheses and do a lipotransference, but it must be taken into account that we cannot put fat in the space where the implants were because the cells do not join the tissues, and they die. Part of the fat can be transplanted in a first intervention and the rest in a second or even third. It is important to note that there must be enough fat to obtain the same size as the implants.

This type of surgery can partially affect the possibility of lactation. In general, you can breastfeed after a reduction intervention.

Nipple sensitivity is not usually altered after a breast lift. Even so, in some cases the sensitivity increases or decreases temporarily, gradually recovering its normal state.

Normally it is recommended to wait between 2 and 3 weeks to resume physical exercise, which should be smooth and progressive. The doctor will set the tone for returning to daily routines after surgery.

Yes, in fact, that is what breast lift surgery consists of. The volume of the breast is not touched at all. If the patient wants a breast remodeling, she will need another type of intervention.

The scars after a breast lift (mastopexy) are more noticeable when compared to a breast augmentation. Depending on the type of surgery performed, scars will remain around the circumference of the areola. They will continue in a line along the lower part of the breast and then extend to both sides, in the sub-mammary fold below the bust, in what is known as an anchor scar. Occasionally a mastopexy may result in a lollipop scar, which is just around the areola and then down the lower part of the breast. Other scars include the “Donut” shape, around the areola, and the “Crescent,” which is a scar just on the upper arch of the areola. With all this, the surgeon will guide you on what type of scar you will have.
