OTOPLASTY
EAR OPERATION
Prominent ears, loop ears or also known as “protruding ears”, are a congenital malformation due to an abnormality of the auricular cartilage. Through otoplasty, or ear surgery, it is possible to resolve these cases, reducing their size or improving the position.
It is common for this defect to be due to a lack of cartilage folds, giving an extended and flat ear appearance. In other cases, a part of the auricular cartilage has excessive development in its junction with the skull, causing the effect that the ears stick out, that they are too separated from the head and very projected.
There are different surgical techniques to correct this malformation. The most common method consists of making an incision behind the ear until reaching the area of the cartilage that presents the lack of curvature. In this way its position is corrected and a natural shape is created. Due to the location of the incision behind the ear, the scar is practically imperceptible.
It is recommended to evaluate this type of facial surgery from the age of 7, since it is when the ears have fully developed. The intervention is performed under local anesthesia and sedation on an outpatient basis. In young children, this ear operation is performed under general anesthesia.

BEFORE AND AFTER
The trust of our patients extends to the post-operative period, when they allow us to share their before and after so that other people can see our work. The only retouching of these images is that of tattoo ink and skin moles, erased to protect the privacy of our patients.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
In general, otoplasty can be performed from the age of four, since at that age, the ears have already fully developed. Performing the surgery when the patient is young can help them avoid ridicule and preserve their self-esteem.
There is a scar on the back of the ear and occasionally on the front surface within one of the folds. In other words, the otoplasty scars are hidden and will be imperceptible.
During an operation the ear cartilage becomes weaker. However, due to its characteristics and the memory of the tissues, there is a small risk that the auricle will reopen slightly.
The usual duration of otoplasty surgery is 1 hour and a half.
For children we always use local anesthesia and sedation, and local anesthesia for adolescents and adults.
The otoplasty postoperative period is not painful. Even so, the patient may have discomfort and inflammation, which will be controlled with a regimen of analgesics.
It is recommended not to smoke or take medications that can alter blood coagulation (such as some pain relievers or natural products). In patients who usually take anticoagulants, it will be the doctor who will indicate the suspension.
There are not many guidelines. In most cases it is recommended to fast (no food or drinks) at least 6-7 hours before the time of surgery. It is also recommended not to wear metal in direct contact with the body (watches, rings, earrings,…) and go without makeup or nail polish.
The surgeon will place a bandage around the patient’s head to help healing to be correct and to avoid any disturbance from external agents. After a few days the bandages will be removed, which will be replaced by a much lighter bandage, similar to a hair band. It should also be protected from sunlight (SPF 50+) and extreme temperatures (sauna, thermal treatments or freezing weather) for a month.
It is advisable to wait a few weeks before wearing glasses. The patient who needs them can temporarily put them on top of the bandage and, once the bandage is removed, wait a few days so as not to put pressure on the area.
The day after the operation, the patient may shower, as long as the head is kept dry. The ears may get wet after 7-10 days and baths are not advisable until 3 weeks after surgery, in order to keep swelling down and avoid discomfort.
It is advisable to avoid physical exercise and sports during the first 7-10 days. After 2 weeks, the inflammation will be less and the patient can gradually begin to resume physical activity. Contact sports should be avoided until 3 to 6 months have passed.
Yes. A torn earlobe is produced by the weight of the earrings or by a sudden pull, it creates an exaggerated increase in the hole or it tears the lobe in two. We also see it in patients who have used dilators and want to remove them. In these cases the solution is simple and after surgery you can wear the earrings again.
