ABDOMINOPLASTY

SURGERY OF THE ABDOMEN

The abdomen is the area of the body where physiologically more fat accumulates. In women, and due to pregnancy, a separation of the abdominal muscles can also occur, increasing the appearance of a balloon in the area.

The consequences of significant weight gain and loss is another reason why both women and men put themselves in the hands of plastic surgeons.

Thus, abdominoplasty or abdominal surgery, eliminates accumulations of abdominal fat and excess skin, which does not disappear with exercise or diet.

Lipoabdominoplasty goes a step further and combines the advantages of both techniques: With this technique, it is possible to tighten the abdominal wall, eliminate skin and localized fat, creating integrity, definition and a flat abdomen.

In addition, it is possible to improve both the aesthetic part and the functionality and the abdominal muscles are corrected and strengthened. In the same intervention and, thanks to liposuction, we manage to define the abdominal area and improve body contour.

MINI ABDOMINOPLASTY

The scar is hidden by underwear. In cases of abdominal diastasis (separation of the muscles) or hernias, the reconstruction of the abdominal muscle wall and the reduction of eventual hernias will be performed in the same surgery.

However, a complete abdominoplasty is not always required, since in cases of minimal or moderate flaccidity and cesarean section scar correction, there is the possibility of performing a mini-abdominoplasty. This intervention will eliminate that unsightly excess skin and you will achieve a flat and defined stomach.

The surgery lasts from 2 to 3 hours, depending on its complexity. It is performed under general anesthesia and requires 1 or 2 nights of admission to the clinic. In the event that the excess fat is small, the intervention can be performed on an outpatient basis, without general anesthesia and without admission.

Our expert surgeons will advise you on the surgical technique that best suits you.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Abdominoplasty and liposuction are different surgeries, although they complement each other. Abdominoplasty is a reconstruction surgery of the abdomen, where it is possible to eliminate flaccidity and excess skin in addition to repairing the muscles. On the other hand, liposuction removes localized fat. With all this, both techniques can be performed in the same intervention.

The stretch marks that are located below the navel will disappear, because that is the part of skin and fat that we will eliminate.

No. The scar from a tummy tuck, just like from a mini tummy tuck, is hidden under underwear and a bikini, since the suture is made in the pubic area. At first it will be reddish until 4-6 months have passed and, progressively, it will lose that intense tone until it becomes white.

The navel does not disappear after a tummy tuck. The navel will be released from the abdominal skin to be moved to the place that best corresponds to it on the patient’s new abdomen. As a result, we achieve a more aesthetic appearance according to the new shape of the abdomen.

The duration of the surgery, although it depends on each specific case, usually lasts between 2 and a half hours and 4 hours. It will also depend on whether it is combined with other surgeries such as liposuction. In the case of a mini-abdominoplasty, the operating room time is 1 hour.

For the abdominoplasty surgery, 1 or 2 nights of admission to the clinic will be required. On the contrary, the mini-abdominoplasty is an outpatient surgery and, after a period of observation, the patient can go home that same day.

A blood test, an electrocardiogram, a chest x-ray, and an abdominal ultrasound under stress will be needed in order to identify eventual hernias.

The mini-abdominoplasty is performed under local anesthesia and sometimes with sedation. Instead, the tummy tuck will be done under general anesthesia, especially if it is done in combination with another type of surgery.

Before abdominoplasty, smoking should be avoided, as well as medications that can alter blood clotting (such as aspirin). In patients who usually take anticoagulants, the doctor will indicate the suspension.

On the day of the intervention, you must fast for at least 6-7 hours before the scheduled time for surgery, not bring metal in direct contact with your body (such as earrings, chains, watches, rings, etc.) and go without makeup or nail polish.

The postoperative period of a tummy tuck can be annoying, so analgesics will be prescribed to reduce discomfort and possible pain. If the abdominal muscles are repaired, the pain can be more intense, but controllable with analgesics.

To recover from a tummy tuck, it is recommended to rest for a week and use a compression garment around the abdomen for 3-4 weeks. This pressotherapy garment is essential due to the wide detachment that is made of the skin and muscles, since otherwise liquid could accumulate between the two. Although it will depend on each case, the recovery time from a tummy tuck to return to work is 2-3 weeks. Likewise, you can start doing physical exercise, progressively, after the month.

During the hours after the procedure it is important to avoid tobacco and avoid taking medications that may promote bleeding. The compression garment should be worn day and night and removed only to shower. This will provide comfort to the patient and speed up their recovery. During the following two weeks you should also protect yourself from the sun’s rays (SPF 50+) and extreme temperatures (sauna, thermal treatments or freezing weather). Finally, two weeks after the operation, specific creams and lymphatic drainage should be applied to improve the results and speed up recovery.

Although from the first moment the result of a tummy tuck with clothes is evident, until after 3-4 months the patient will not be able to appreciate the final result. The scars from a tummy tuck, which will be camouflaged with underwear, will take between a year and a half and two years to take on their final appearance.

Yes, but it is advisable to wait 1 year after delivery. As a consequence of pregnancy and abdominal distension, the rectus abdominis muscles will separate from each other and therefore the abdomen appears bulging and not as flat as before. This is corrected by joining these muscles through special sutures known as a sting, which creates a flat and strong stomach.

You will be able to sunbathe once the inflammation has disappeared, which means waiting about a month. However, the scar will always have to be protected from sun exposure, either with total protection cream (SPF 50+) or with scar-reducing strips.

Like any intervention that requires general anesthesia, complications can occur, but the risks of a tummy tuck are minimal, very specific and generally not serious.

In general, one month after surgery, the patient will be able to resume basic physical activity, being able to gradually do sit-ups. 15 days after the operation, the patient will be able to begin to move more freely, which will help prevent the formation of venous thrombi.

If it is horizontal, it will always be hidden, since the mini tummy tuck scar is lower than that of any cesarean section.

The most advisable thing is to perform the abdominoplasty after pregnancy, otherwise it will affect the aesthetic result, losing the definition of the abdomen. However, there is no medical contraindication to getting pregnant again.
